The slightest smell, for example, peanuts for some allergy sufferers, is enough to cause a life-threatening reaction in them. Who can sense danger first? Naturally, our four-legged friends. But the dog should be specially prepared for this purpose.
And it is absolutely unbelievable, but labradors at an early stage determine colon cancer much better than a laboratory blood test does. Dogs of this breed demonstrate effectiveness in more than 90% of cases.
US health officials have the following statistics: 4 out of 100 American children suffer from food allergies. In most cases, we are talking about preschool children, where this figure is much higher. The mentioned phenomenon began to develop rapidly only in recent years. Between 1997 and 2007 food allergy among Americans under the age of 18 increased by about 18 percent. Medical science is not yet in a position to unequivocally answer this question.
Skin rashes, itching, shortness of breath, and even deaths are due to foods that were not even eaten. It is enough to catch their aroma. The real shock to parents was the death in 2006 of a 15-year-old resident of Canada, who, after kissing with her boyfriend, suddenly began to suffocate. Arriving emergency doctors can only state the death of a teenager. The teenager was allergic to peanuts, and her boyfriend was eating peanut butter sandwiches an hour before goodbye.
For some families, where a similar reaction to allergens contained in food products is observed in children, the acquisition of a specially trained dog became a real solution. Next to such a child you can see, say, a St. Bernard in a vest. In the pockets of this vest, there are not only containers for inhalers and other medications necessary for the hostess, but the clothes themselves are designed to indicate that this is a specially trained, certified dog, designed to provide assistance.
Depending on the instructor and the dog, such four-legged pets can cost from 10 thousand to 20 thousand dollars. After the dog senses the corresponding allergens, it must give its owner a special signal. In some cases, the animal can either suddenly sit down or squeeze between the allergic person and the allergen dangerous to him. Almost daily, our lesser smaller friends, the owners of such dogs claim, warn of a danger to which a person, especially a young one, would not pay attention.
At present, in Connecticut, activists are pushing for a law to be enacted at the local level that allows these dogs to accompany their owners everywhere, as was the case with guide dogs. Legalization of the services of such dogs could significantly facilitate the life of both them and their owners. The servants of the people from the deputy corps in this situation prefer to remain silent.
Specialists from the Kyushu University of Japan found that with certain types of cancer, chemical substances circulate in the human body. Thanks to this, the doctors decided at an early stage to prevent malignant tumors in the colon, using a dog scent. It has long been noticed that dogs can recognize different types of cancer – skin, lungs and breast.
Dog scent is used as a diagnostic method. 6966.jpeg Scientists at Hideto Sonoda Japanese Medical Center conducted 74 “snuff tests” with a specially trained Labrador for several months. During each exercise, the dog was allowed to smell five samples of stool and odors, and always only one of them contained traces of cancer. The experiment involved 48 people with a confirmed diagnosis of colon cancer, as well as 258 volunteers who either never had a malignant tumor of the colon, or they had long since recovered from it.
The effectiveness of the Labrador struck the doctors. The dog made an accurate diagnosis in more than 90% of cases.
At the same time, extraneous odors and aromas did not interfere with the four-legged friend, even if the patients smoked or had other problems with the intestines. Most importantly, the animal showed the greatest result when sniffing samples of patients who had an early phase of the disease.
According to medical experts, routine blood tests for stool samples — currently the most effective method for diagnosing colon cancer — can detect colon cancer at an early stage in only one out of ten cases. The British medical magazine “The Lancet” in 1989 for the first time reported a four-legged friend who, thanks to his instinct, revealed skin cancer from his owner.
